How I can help you

I can write the things you need: leaflets, brochures, articles, advertising, marketing, press releases, sales letters, training manuals, email marketing, editing …. just ask. I can turn my hand to most assignments. My specialist areas are tourism, landscape, local identity, heritage and the arts.

Why My Experience Makes Me Your Ideal Freelance Copywriter

I’m a freelance writer with over a decade’s experience in magazine writing as both Robert Hawley and under the pen-name Jonas Holdsworth. I have submitted copy on architecture, art history, landscapes, rivers, mountains, the Brontës, Charles Dickens, cricket grounds, ceramics, county boundaries, medieval hunting forests, and local events from Skipton Puppet Festival to Appleby Horse Fair, as well as writing county tours and book reviews. I’ve been published in Yorkshire Life, Yorkshire Ridings, The Dalesman, Lancashire Life, Lancashire Magazine, Lake District Life, Countryman’s Weekly, The Counties, Somerset Life and many other magazines and journals.
I have co-edited brochures for festivals, written on-line county histories for children, produced education packs to be used by primary school children visiting stately homes, and founded and edited a magazine on regional and local identity for a national campaign group. I have written press releases for local campaign groups and supplied historical background notes for theatre programmes.
With this wealth of experience moving into freelance copywriting was an easy step.

How my background helps me write

I possess a First Class degree in History from the University of Sheffield, and a Masters degree in Creative Writing, so you can count on accurate copy, written with flair, to meet your goals. Whilst I specialise in writing on landscape, local identity, the arts, literature and heritage matters, I also have the research skills to write competently on any subject your business requires, and I excel in explaining complicated matters in plain English.
I grew up in the countryside, then worked in Liverpool, Sheffield and London before settling in the Yorkshire Dales. Whether your business is in a city, market town or village I understand your location and what makes it special and the copy I write for you will reflect your business and its identity in every line.
As a fully qualified secondary school teacher with over 20 years’ experience I can help you tap into the lucrative school visit market. I know what teachers are looking for on school trips and how you can help sell your heritage or arts attraction to busy teachers. I can also write effective, targeted student visitor packs to make sure your visit is a success and the schools return each year. I have taught history up to A-level, RE up to GCSE, and English and Geography at KS3 (11-13 year olds) and can make your visitor sheets relevant to the National Curriculum in any of those subjects. I can also help you with copy when applying for heritage grants, ensuring you clearly outline the educational value of your establishment.
I am a published poet and I live with my wife who runs a bookshop so I’m never short of inspiration. Seeing Catherine work so hard building her business brand gives me real insight into what it takes to run a successful business from great traditional advertising materials to a twitter presence and email newsletters.
You can be sure that I understand the needs of small business owners for sensibly priced, focused copy that works first time to help your business fulfil its aims.
